Mary Edmonia Lewis aka Edmonia Lewis was an American sculptor who spent most of her career in Rome, Italy. She was the first woman to achieve the international fame and recognition as a sculptor in the fine arts world. Edmonia's work was known for incorporating themes that related to black and indigenous people of the Americas into Neoclassical-style sculpture.
During the American Civil War, Edmonia Lewis gained prominence in the USA, and at the end of the 19th century, she remained the only black woman who participated and also the only black woman who was recognized to any degree by the American artistic mainstream. In 2002, the scolar Molefi Kete Asante named her on his list of 100 Greatest African Americans.
Edmonia was inspired by the lives of the abolitionsts and Civil war heroes. In 1863 and 1864, she included some of the most famous abolitionists of her day, like John Brown and Colonel Robert Gould Shaw.
